From it’s origin as a grassroots community group of concerned parents, PREVENT! of Brevard, Inc. has evolved into a leading provider of comprehensive prevention, intervention, treatment, aftercare and support services. PREVENT!’s mission is to develop and deliver services which promote and support positive choices, strengthen and preserve families, and prevent destructive behaviors including substance abuse, delinquency and violence.

In 1989, PREVENT! was one of only twenty agencies nationwide to be recognized by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for its exemplary programs, and in 1990, PREVENT! was awarded two federal Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) five-year demonstration grants. Since 1994, PREVENT! has been awarded three additional multi-year CSAP grants, a five-year U.S. Department of Education grant and two three-year Florida Department of Children and Families grants to replicate and evaluate national research-based program models to determine effectiveness among various youth and family populations.

More than twenty years’ experience in program delivery and evaluation has afforded PREVENT! a clear understanding of the issues associated with substance abuse and other destructive behaviors, as well as the crucial elements of effective prevention programs. The challenge today, for a community-based, not-for-profit service provider such as PREVENT!, is to acquire adequate and stable financial resources to deliver these proven model programs to a significant percent of the identified at-risk youth population.

PREVENT! is governed by a 30-member Board of Directors representative of the community the Organization serves. The Board meets monthly and has five standing committees. The President/CEO has 13 years experience in prevention leadership and supervises a staff of fifty-two professionals and para-professionals. The Organization is State licensed in Prevention, Intervention, Treatment and Employee Assistance. PREVENT! administers multiple federal, state, local and private contracts and grants annually. The Organization’s current operating budget is approximately $2.1 million.
